Head over to the Faye Spanos Concert Hall for an exciting evening of jazz including master pianist Monty Alexander and amazing students from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. The final jazz concert of the spring 2011 term features the Pacific Jazz Ensemble performing with visiting artist Monty Alexander. The evening will also include performances by the Pacific Jazz Combos.

Join the Filipino American Heritage Associtation (FAHA) for their 2nd Annual Cultural Night. The event is this Saturday, April 2nd and it’ll be good time. How do I know?
Well, for those who know me, I am far from a Filipino. However, I have spent my share of time at the infamous Filipino parties. All the Filipino parties that I have attended, there is so much food and drink to feed an army. And just when you think you can’t eat anymore, you HAVE TO take some home with you. You can’t leave empty handed, so your all set for lunch the next day. I love the spirit and hospitality the Filipino culture provides. It’s amazing and so are the lumpia!
Back to the event: So, I covered the amount and food and drinks that will be there. In addition, also planned is Filipino Dance, singing, performances, prizes and more.

Yea, I know, we are living in a digital world. It’s very evident by the amount of people on Facebook, using ipods and ipad’s to conduct their lives. I’m guilty, I couldn’t do my business with the effectiveness as I do with out my iphone. So, why Rasputin Music, where music is sold in the old medium of CD’s and records. And movies in VHS? Because it’s cool and kind of relic, plus it’s a fun place to check out.
Besides it’s very inexpensive. There is a ton of used CD’s, DVD’s and VHS tapes for a lot less than you can buy them online. All you need to do is come home an copy the thing into itunes and now it’s digital. Anyway, If you haven’t check out Rasputin yet, it’s pretty cool. They also have cool posters and other movie memorabilia which can make for good gifts.

Tonight at the Delta College Atherton Auditorium, the best of the best will be performing. The San Joaquin County Honor Band will showcase there musical talent at 7pm.
The Honors Concert is an annual event featuring the county’s most gifted and talented middle school band and choir students. It is co-sponsored by the San Joaquin County Office of Education, Delta Community College and the San Joaquin County Music Educators’ Association. Participation is open to all middle school band and choir directors and their students in San Joaquin County.
One of the director of the Band is Chris Anderson from Don Riggio School and many of his students. See them perform Oye Como Va. These are very talented kids so it should be a great show!

This Wednesday, the 23rd, Michael Gray will be holding a FREE lecture into the insights of Bob Dylan and his life’s work. This is a great Free event for all you music lovers out there. Read an excerpt below about the planed event at the University of the Pacific.
During his nearly 50 years in the music business, Bob Dylan has been labeled the “voice of a generation and “America’s Troubadour.” He often is described as a genius, a music sensation who seemed to appear nearly out of thin air after being selected by a Greek muse to write lyrics that will be discussed and studied for generations. And he is always labeled as a “folk” artist.
In truth, one does not have to look half-way around the world to find the roots of Dylan’s inspirations, says author Michael Gray. Dylan wasn’t touched by a muse from Greek folklore, but rather by a muse from Mississippi – the blues.
At 7 p.m. Feb. 23, Gray will discuss how the blues not only influenced Dylan’s lyrics and music structure, but continues to have a heavy influence on modern American folk music. The lecture, titled “Bob Dylan and the Poetry of the Blues,” will be held in the Janet Leigh Theatre on Pacific’s Stockton campus. It is free and open to the public.

This lush piece carries a cantabile tune “sung” throughout the orchestra.
Dvorak- Humoresque
This arrangement for orchestra takes a popular solo piece by Dvorak and enriches it with colorful orchestral sounds.
Scarlatti – Tommasini – The Good Humored Ladies
This piece is a lot of fun to listen to. It is very light in nature. The music is taken from many of Scarlatti’s piano pieces and dressed up in an extraordinary fashion by Tommasini. I always look for a big ending of the festival and the final movement delivers! It is quick with a wonderful curtain call feeling of an ending.

Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of the Saint John’s Chamber Orchestra Festival!
This year we have invited Maestro George Buckbee all the way from Finland to guest conduct. He and Peter Ottesen started this fine orchestra and it has been going strong ever since. We celebrate so much of what is good in Stockton through our music making. A great many of the orchestral musicians reside here, along with most of our soloists. The guest composer went to U.O.P. and our concert hall is right in the center of town! No wonder we won the Mayor’s Award for bringing the arts to Downtown Stockton! This is a festival of high quality. The excellence of our music making along with the fantastic acoustics and beauty of Saint John’s Church make for a constantly enriching human and musical event year after year.
