More about William Rice:

He longed to preserve the natural beauty of turn-of-the-century California through his art. In 1900, Rice traveled from Pennsylvania to Stockton to serve as Supervisor of Art for the city’s public schools. While living in Stockton, Rice became captivated by the local landscape. He spent a lifetime capturing our region’s visual wealth.

Curated by Rice’s great-granddaughter, Pacific senior Marie-Clare Treseder, this exhibition provides an exclusive opportunity to experience the largest single collection of W.S. Rice’s work. The show includes prints and watercolors from rarely seen private collections, as well as several of Rice’s personal effects.

Please join us for a catered reception, Thursday March 17, 5:30 p.m. and a talk by Rice’s grandson, Carl Treseder, on the artist and his work at 6:00 p.m.

The 10th Annual St. Johns Chamber Orchestra Festival is happening this weekend. You have one more day to enjoy the Music! Tomorrow’s Concert will be as follows:

Sunday, Jan 30th, 2011, 5:00 p.m.

Kimball – Conductor with Nina Flyer, Ann Miller, Sonia Leong – Soloists
Handel – Entrance of the Queen of Sheba
A Baroque favorite!
Beethoven Triple Concerto – Nina Flyer, Ann Miller, Sonia Leong – Soloists
Three soloist (The New Pacific Trio) join our orchestra in a great work by Beethoven. A well established trio as the soloists with our fine orchestra make for a dramatic first half of the concert.
Intermission
Faure – Pavane
This lush piece carries a cantabile tune “sung” throughout the orchestra.
Dvorak- Humoresque
This arrangement for orchestra takes a popular solo piece by Dvorak and enriches it with colorful orchestral sounds.
Scarlatti – Tommasini – The Good Humored Ladies
This piece is a lot of fun to listen to. It is very light in nature. The music is taken from many of Scarlatti’s piano pieces and dressed up in an extraordinary fashion by Tommasini. I always look for a big ending of the festival and the final movement delivers! It is quick with a wonderful curtain call feeling of an ending.

Doors open one-hour before concerts begin. Free, secured off-street parking available.

Tickets are $15 each for all concerts. They can be purchased at St John’s Church Office – 316 N El dorado St, Stockton.

Check out the Church on Facebook.

Backgound of the Orchestra:

Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of the Saint John’s Chamber Orchestra Festival!
This year we have invited Maestro George Buckbee all the way from Finland to guest conduct. He and Peter Ottesen started this fine orchestra and it has been going strong ever since. We celebrate so much of what is good in Stockton through our music making. A great many of the orchestral musicians reside here, along with most of our soloists. The guest composer went to U.O.P. and our concert hall is right in the center of town! No wonder we won the Mayor’s Award for bringing the arts to Downtown Stockton! This is a festival of high quality. The excellence of our music making along with the fantastic acoustics and beauty of Saint John’s Church make for a constantly enriching human and musical event year after year.

Enjoy!

Barefoot in the park was written by Neil Simon and is a romantic comedy. The original broadway play first opened in October of 1963 and featured the likes of Robert Redford, Elizabeth Ashley and Mildred Natwick.

I have never seen the play but am assuming it is a good one since it ran for 1530 shows! It closed in June of 1967 and was nominated for three Tony Awards. If you are looking for a good show, head over to the Civic Theatre this weekend and catch the final shows! The theatre could really use all the local support.
