Let the fun begin! In just one more day the 26th anniversary of the Stockton Asparagus Festival will take place at the Downtown Stockton Waterfront. As with previous years, the amount of fun, activities, entertainment will not disappoint. Perhaps the best and most important part about the Asparagus Festival is the proceeds of the festival are directly injected back into local charities!
When: April 15th-17th
The proceeds of the Stockton Asparagus Festival are shared by over 100 charities that are represented by the Spear-It Staff volunteers. Each charity receives a “donation” based on a schedule of units, or hours, for the work performed by the volunteers. In 2008 the Asparagus Festival was able to distribute $461,912 among the charities involved. In the past 23 years, over $4.5 million dollars has been contributed back to local charities directly from the Stockton Asparagus Festival.

Eddie Griffin didn’t always aspire to be a comedian. His first love was always dance and by the young age of 16, he opened his own dance studio and was choreographing the Kansas City Chiefs half-time shows. But all of that would soon change when one night his cousin dared him to go on stage at the local comedy club Sanford and Sons where he was told to do 3 minutes. He performed off-the-cuff for 45 minutes successfully. It was then that Griffin purchased a one-way ticket to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a stand up. Celebrating their 20th Anniversary, the 2011 theme is “The Roaring 20′s”. Each team will have the opportunity to win the award for Best Team Name. Audience members can join in the fun by competing for the Best Costume and Best Decorated Table awards.
Trivia Bee Teams are being sought for The 20th Annual Trivia Bee that is being held Friday, March 11, 5:00 to 9:00pm at the Stockton Civic Memorial Auditorium. A fun and competitive evening filled with team and audience participation, the Trivia Bee is an annual Stockton favorite!
There will be three people on each team, with a total of 38 teams participating. Minds will be stretched as each team answers a broad range of trivia questions with a goal of winning the coveted Bee Bobble Head Award. The entry fee per team is $550 and includes dinner for each team member.

This Friday, November 19th, take in a old Classic at the Bob Hope FOX theatre. The Friends of the Fox will be showing the 1961 Classic Flick Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a 1961 romantic comedy also featuring Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, and Mickey Rooney. The film was directed by Blake Edwards and released by Paramount Pictures. It was loosely based on the novella of the same name by Truman Capote.

Head to downtown Stockton and visit California Historical Landmark #513. It’s the burial place of Juan Flaco, California’s Paul Revere.
Juan Flaco’s feat remains one of the truly great sagas of American history. He rode 52 hours to carry a message for help for the Los Angeles garrison, covering more than 400 miles.
Captain Archibald Gillespie, commander of Fort Hill at Los Angeles, looked around at his depleted garrison of fifty men, then down at the paper in his hand. “September 23, 1846,” he read aloud. “Captain Gillespie, you are hereby ordered to surrender the fort within twenty-four hours, or you and your men will all be killed. Signed, José Maria Flores, Commander of the Mexican Military Forces at Los Angeles.” Read what happens next! It’s a good story!

NO. 513 BURIAL PLACE OF JOHN BROWN (JUAN FLACO) – In 1846, during American conquest of California, John Brown -nicknamed Juan Flaco – rode from Los Angeles to San Francisco in four days to warn Commodore Stockton of the siege of Los Angeles, and troops were sent to secure the city. This ‘Paul Revere of California,’ who lived in Stockton from 1851 to 1859, is buried in the former Citizen’s Cemetery near this site.
